My boys love eating gummy treats. But let’s get real for a minute. Conventional gummy bears or candies are full of refined sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and artificial colors. The food dyes used in the US have been exposed for causing adverse issues in children’s activity and attention. As parents, we want our kids to have natural alternatives that are also delicious. Creating a batch of all-natural, nothing-artificial, upgraded gummies is how we make it happen in our house.
The base of these gummies is an herbal tea or syrup. In this recipe we our using a locally crafted syrup made by Core Matters SLC called Elderberry Fusion Syrup. We love the sweet, spicy flavor and the combination of elderberry syrup, rose hips and chokecherry. Elderberry is a great immune booster, helping to keep colds and the flu at bay. You can use any herbal tea so find the ones your child likes (or needs).
1 cup Elderberry Fusion Syrup (or other herbal tea/syrup)
3 Tbs gelatin
1/4 cup raw, local honey
Mix together gelatin with 2 Tbs cold water (or syrup) and set aside. It will get super thick and firm. Dissolve the honey into the herbal syrup or tea until steaming warm. Add a little of the hot liquid to the gelatin and break it into smaller pieces with a spoon. Add this to the pan of tea & honey and stir until completely dissolved. Poor into molds (we used Lego molds purchased on Amazon) and refrigerate for one hour.
Keep these stored in the fridge for up to a week. It helps to leave them in the molds until they are consumed so they stay jiggly and don’t get too firm. Freezing them changes the texture so avoid this. If using a medicinal herb, stick with 2-3 gummies per day, depending on the size. My boys and I made a demo video for you and we hope you enjoy!
